In case you missed it, House Republican Leader Matt Hall and his House Republican colleagues on Monday rolled out a new plan to help Michigan students succeed in school and beyond. The education plan focuses on helping students, parents, and teachers through a wide-ranging, cohesive policy strategy. The plan would make schools safer, offer new pathways to graduation and post-high school success, recruit and retain good teachers, help students learn to read well, and provide other supports to deliver a high-quality education in Michigan.

Below are audio clips of Leader Hall’s remarks at the press conference.

Clip 1: Leader Hall discusses recent M-STEP results, which found that three in five third graders are not proficient in reading and language arts — a 10-year low.

Clip 2: Leader Hall says the first plank of the Republican education plan is restoring $302 million in school safety and mental health funding that Democrats cut out of the latest state budget.

Clip 3: Leader Hall shares another component of the education plan: giving students flexibility to learn real-life skills in high school.

Clip 4: Leader Hall highlights the proposed testing pilot program to help measure progress during the year while reducing the overall burden of test prep. The plan would free up more classroom time for students to master the basics.
